Q: Which hut deadline is next?

Ostrander lottery winners are notified by Friday Oct 23, 2026 at 5pm. Pear Lake reservations open Wednesday Nov 4, 2026 at 9am Pacific. Mount Tahoma Trails opens online booking Monday Nov 9, after its Nov 7 Gala.

Q: I didn't win the Ostrander lottery. Can I still go?

Yes. Leftover space opens first-come, first-served at 9am on Tuesday Dec 1, 2026, and more dates are released every Tuesday at 9am from Dec 8 to Mar 16. There is no waitlist.

Q: Is the OPUS Hut lottery open?

Not for winter. The winter 2026-27 OPUS lottery is over and normal booking is open. The next lottery is for summer 2027: entries December 26 (8am MT) to January 2 (7pm MT draw).

Q: When does 10th Mountain hut booking open?

Member lottery forms are due mid-February. Members book on the first business day of April, the Braun and Friends' Huts open to everyone on the first business day of May, and the public books from the first business day of June, all at 8am.

Q: Do I need avalanche training for a hut trip?

For most of these huts, yes. Sequoia Parks Conservancy says avalanche conditions exist at all times on the trail to Pear Lake, and the Alpine Club of Canada strongly recommends AST 1 at minimum for Ski Weeks.

Avalanche safety

Most hut approaches cross or sit near avalanche terrain. Before you go, read the forecast at avalanche.org, CAIC in Colorado, NWAC in Washington or Avalanche Canada in BC, carry a beacon, shovel and probe, and have at least one person trained in companion rescue. If you can't judge the terrain, hire a guide or pick an easier hut.
