El Niño 2026-27 and Colorado Skiing: Which Pass and Resorts to Pick

Short answer: NOAA says a strong-to-very strong El Niño is likely this winter. In Colorado that mostly tilts the odds toward the southern mountains (Wolf Creek, Purgatory, Telluride) and does little for I-70, Vail or Steamboat. Past strong El Niños ranged from big to below average. Pick your pass for where you ski, then hedge. [NOAA CPC] [Axios]

Forecast sources checked Oct 24, 2026. Not a snow forecast: nobody can promise totals this far out.

What forecasters are actually saying (Oct 2026)

Past strong El Niño winters in Colorado

WinterWhat the sources say
1982-83A big Colorado snow year, per Axios. [Axios]
1997-98Closer to average, per Axios. OpenSnow calls it the closest match to this year. [Axios] [OpenSnow]
2015-16Closer to average (Axios); below-average snowpack (CU Boulder). [Axios] [CU Boulder]
2023-24Above-average snowpack, per CU Boulder. [CU Boulder]

Takeaway: strong El Niño winters in Colorado have gone both ways. The state climatologist adds one reassuring note: Colorado has never had a bad snow drought during a strong El Niño. That still isn't a promise of a big year. [Colorado Climate Center]

Which Colorado resorts lean the right way

Every source tells the same story: the south leans wetter, the north shows no clear signal. Tap a resort for opening day and lodging.

"Leans wetter" means the odds tilt that way in past El Niño winters, not that a resort will get more snow this year. Prices and pass days checked Oct 24, 2026.

Should El Niño change your pass?

You ski mostly I-70, Summit County, Vail or Steamboat: no

No source we read gives those resorts a clear El Niño signal. Pick Epic or Ikon on the resorts you'll drive to and the price: Epic $1,169 or Epic Local $869, Ikon $1,529 or Ikon Base $1,099. Our Epic vs Ikon for Colorado guide breaks it down resort by resort. [Epic] [Ikon]

You want to chase southern snow

You're a Front Range day-tripper

Axios notes El Niño can bring fall and spring upslope storms, which would help Eldora (Ikon). Nice if it happens; not a reason to buy a pass on its own. [Axios]

How to hedge if the snow doesn't show

Lodging near Durango and Purgatory

Durango is the base for Purgatory and a short drive to Silverton; Wolf Creek is a day trip east over the pass. Map priced for Nov 27-29; change the dates in the map.

Drought and early season

The U.S. Drought Monitor map for Oct 20, 2026 shows 61% of Colorado in drought, down from about 86% on Sep 22. El Niño tilts fall odds wetter, but it's no promise for mountain snowpack. [U.S. Drought Monitor] [drought.gov] [Colorado Climate Center]

Opening dates are a separate question. Purgatory opens Nov 20, Crested Butte Nov 25 and Taos Nov 26. Silverton's guided season starts Dec 31 [Silverton]. Wolf Creek will open asap, no date yet; Telluride and Monarch haven't confirmed dates. All dates: Colorado opening dates 2026-27.

El Niño and Colorado skiing FAQ

Will El Niño bring more snow to Colorado this winter?
Not necessarily. NOAA rates a strong-to-very strong El Niño as likely, but says impacts are "not guaranteed." Colorado's state climatologist sees no reliable link for the northern mountains and a tilt toward more snow in the south. Treat it as better odds in the San Juans, not a forecast. [NOAA CPC] [Colorado Climate Center]
Which Colorado ski resorts do best in El Niño years?
The southern ones lean wetter: the San Juans (Wolf Creek, Purgatory, Silverton, Telluride) and the Arkansas and Rio Grande basins, which include Monarch. That's a lean in past winters, per Axios and the Colorado Climate Center, not a guarantee for this one. [Axios] [Colorado Climate Center]
Is El Niño good for Wolf Creek and Purgatory?
Both are in the San Juans, the part of Colorado where El Niño winters lean wetter. Neither is on Epic or Ikon: Purgatory is on the Power Pass ($1,149 adult), and Wolf Creek sells its own pass ($1,423 adult). Odds, not a promise. [Purgatory] [Wolf Creek]
Does El Niño help Vail, Breckenridge or Steamboat?
There's no clear signal. Axios reports a weak El Niño link for Steamboat, Vail, Summit County and Aspen, and the state climatologist says there's no relationship for the northern mountains. Choose a pass for those resorts on price and coverage. [Axios] [Colorado Climate Center]
Should I buy Epic or Ikon because of El Niño?
Probably not. If you ski I-70 or Steamboat, El Niño shouldn't change your pick. If you want southern trips, Epic adds 7 Telluride days and Ikon adds 7 Taos days. Epic vs Ikon for Colorado
What pass covers Telluride, Purgatory, Wolf Creek or Taos?
Telluride: Epic Pass, 7 days (not Epic Local). Purgatory: Power Pass. Wolf Creek: its own pass only. Taos: Ikon 7 days, Ikon Base 5, Mountain Collective 2. [Epic] [Purgatory] [Wolf Creek] [Ikon] [MC]
How strong is the 2026-27 El Niño?
NOAA's Oct 8 update puts the odds of a strong-to-very strong El Niño through January-March 2027 above 83%, and gives an 83% chance of a historic event for October-December. CU Boulder says it may be the strongest on record. Next NOAA update: Nov 12. [NOAA CPC] [CU Boulder]
What happened in past strong El Niño winters in Colorado?
They went both ways. Axios describes 1982-83 as a big year and 1997-98 and 2015-16 as closer to average; CU Boulder notes 2015-16 snowpack was below average and 2023-24 above. [Axios] [CU Boulder]
